Frequently Asked Questions
What does a relationship counsellor do?
A relationship counsellor gives help and support to the individual/couple who are coming for counselling and to their relationship.
How does the counsellor work?
The counsellor is responsible for running the session and providing a safe and secure environment for the counselling session to take place.
He will typically spend time between listening to the clients, asking questions of them and being curious about exploring the issues that the clients are bringing in a non-judgemental fashion.
Where does the counselling take place?
If you decide to come for a face to face counselling session it takes place in a secure, professional, relaxed environment in a room that is dedicated to counselling in a clinic or similar building.
The room will have three chairs in it and the counsellor faces the client(s) at a comfortable distance with everybody seated.
A telephone counselling session will take place from the comfort of your own home.
Does a relationship counsellor give advice?
Not in the sense that he tells you what you should do in your relationship or what the right thing is to do.
The role of a counsellor is to remain neutral and balanced.
Does it matter whether the counsellor is male or female?
All counsellors , whether male or female, are trained to the same standards which include balance, neutrality and impartiality irrespective of their own gender.
How long is a counselling session?
My sessions run for 50 mins.
How much do you charge for a counselling session?
I charge £45 per session outside of London and I ask for payment to be made in advance of each session.
How often do I/We come for counselling?
Usually once a week at the same time and day.
How many sessions can I/we expect to come for counselling?
It varies. For some people 4-6 sessions are enough. Others have more
Is relationship counselling and marriage guidance the same thing?
Yes they are. The terms relationship counselling, couple counselling, marriage guidance all mean the same thing.
It feels strange talking to somebody else about my/our relationship – it feels as though I/We are admitting somehow that we have failed.
It is normal to feel this way and normal and healthy to seek help and support.
I feel embarrassed or ashamed about the thought of our friends/family/children/colleagues finding out if we were coming for counselling.
This prospect can feel understandably uncomfortable for some people while others feel more at ease about it. The counsellor adheres to a code of strict confidentiality and doubtless you will do your best not to let anyone know you are coming if that is what you want.
